Benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate)

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is the non-cancerous growth of the prostate, associated with age and with exposure to male hormones throughout life. It is more common after age 50 and usually produces urinary symptoms ranging from mild to severe, with medical or surgical treatment depending on each case.

What is benign prostatic hyperplasia?

It is the most common benign disorder of the prostate: a non-cancerous growth of the gland, secondary to age and to exposure to male sex hormones throughout life. As age advances, the prostate reaches a larger size. This growth frequently translates into obstructive urinary symptoms, popularly known as prostatism. After age 50, the incidence of these symptoms rises noticeably.

What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia are:

  • Getting up several times during the night to urinate
  • Urinating more frequently during the day
  • Weak urinary stream
  • Needing to strain to urinate
  • Intermittent stream
  • Urinary urgency, with little time to reach the bathroom
  • A sensation of not fully emptying the bladder

How is it treated?

Symptoms can range from mild to severe. Depending on their intensity, treatment can be medical or surgical. At Clínica Urología Avanzada, minimally invasive surgical options for an enlarged prostate include HoLEP, vapor ablation, and other laser prostate surgery techniques.
