What is it?

A minimally invasive surgery that provides access to the kidney through a small incision in the lower back to fragment and remove large stones.

How it works

Under general anesthesia and radiologic/ultrasound guidance, a nephroscope is inserted into the kidney. The stones are fragmented using laser, ultrasonic, or pneumatic energy and are completely removed.

Who it's for

Patients with kidney stones larger than 2 cm, staghorn stones, or when other less invasive techniques are not suitable.

Benefits

  • Treatment of large stones
  • A few-millimeter incision
  • High complete stone-clearance rate
  • Short hospital stay
  • Less postoperative pain
  • Faster recovery than open surgery

Recovery

Hospital stay of 1 to 3 days. Return to work within 1 to 2 weeks, with subsequent imaging follow-up.
